Ten is an almost perfect album for the fans, but Vs. gives Ten a run for its money. Dave A. on the kit give a whole new life to the music and took the music to a whole new level. Great album.
  • Arguably their very best.

Rarely does a band deliver so surprisingly well after capturing the minds and hearts of listeners so infectiously with a debut album as Pearl Jam did with Ten. It wasn’t even expectations that were running high after Ten- we were already in love and engulfed in Pearl Jam’s debut album, it had become life itself. So whatever the band was gonna offer up next would’ve been devoured without much criticism from anyone (except maybe music critics who didn’t get into Ten in the first place). The band could’ve easily remade Ten and we’d buy it long enough to further their career. But that’s not what Pearl Jam wanted, and certainly not what they gave us. Vs. is arguably their best album (Vitalogy possibly better), because we didn’t see it coming, and there’s virtually no acknowledgement of what they did on Ten. They seemed to have cleared the slate, started over, and made a remarkably great album. Again.

Best album by Pearl Jam. Remastered version of ‘W.M.A’ is worth a listen on its own - a great treble take on one of their best songs. Brendan O’Brien really focused on an absence of bass on the remaster. ‘Cready Stomp’ made it worth the purchase over the original album for me. Nothing sophomoric about this one. ‘Vs.’ took Vedder out of his comfort zone and away from the “Seattle Sound”. Really separated themselves from the shadow of Nirvana and Soundgarden on their second effort. A breath of fresh air and a leaning towards punk (e.g. - ‘Blood’). Then the bluesy jazz ballad ‘Indifference’ - don’t think O’Brien changed much on this one. A perfect end to the perfect album.

This record is a literal beast. Vs is the album to start with for a new listener to the band. It captures the raw energy they had at the time, and stirs the emotions found on their later work. This reissue also features Crazy Mary, one of the bands finest moments in the studio, ever.
