  • Their Most Under-Rated Album

This is sort of Depeche Mode’s “lost album”. Ultra proved there was life after Alan Wilder’s departure and Dave Gahan’s substance abuse problems. This next album of theirs is one of their most eclectic. "Dream On" and “Dead of Night” show that DM is not done with modifying and experimenting with their sound and that you can never quite put them in a box. "I Feel Loved" is vintage Mode and "Breath" is a very strong Martin sung song. But the best track on the album is, strangely, 11th in the lineup.... “I Am You” is an hypnotic track that lulls you into its darkness. If I have one complaint, it is that I actually feel there is too much guitar on this album. This is illustrated best by "Freelove". The Flood remix utilizes electronics more than the album version, and it is much stronger.
  • It's Not a Bad Record

May not be the band's best work, but it's far from bad. At first it's boring if you grew up with the more energetic albums from the 80s and 90s. But once you take that out of the way, it's a pretty solid album for DM. This album experiments more with electronica and even some ambient music with songs like "When the Body Speaks" and "Goodnight Lovers". I think this album is great, not perfect. After 'Ultra' an album that was extremely dark and had more of a rock appeal, it's great to see Depeche Mode try to do something even more new but in a way familiar.
  • Not the Depeche Mode I grew up listening too.

Let's face it. Depeche Mode was founded based on its electronic sounds. NOT VOCALS!! Alan Wilder was a key part, and his sounds were original. Depeche mode's songs were constantly in the Top 100 Billboards. Now its just a total mess. Exciter is by far the worse album. Sad!! So Sad!!

I find it interesting that this album is so polarizing among the reviewers. Although, it doesn't surprise me. I am a long-time depeche mode fan and I understand the frustration initially felt upon hearing a new, modern sound that depeche mode finally transitioned into, but you have to give the band mad credit for their ability to grow as artists. Early Depeche Mode is a dream. It's fantastic and special and unique. This album for me marked the transition into their newer modern sound. This was the album that finally admitted that the boys had "grown up". With that said, I still remember expecting something much different when I first heard it. It didn't immediately grab me. However, this album had a lot of beauty in it and contemplation in it that did captivate me as a listener from the beginning. With that said, I never expected it to, but over the years, I have repeatedly come back to this album at times of contemplation and even meditation. My love for it has grown and consumed me wholly. I now adore the maturity, broodiness, simplicity, and silence within this album. I look back on it now and see it as a brilliant transition for a band who, whether its fans wanted it to or not, needed to grow into something else. The artists wanted and needed to go there and so they did and I can't thank them enough for creating this special piece of work, that I believe will one day be regarded as a classic.
  • Not the DM I know and love

I remember being all happy when this came out. I bought it without reservations. Was super disappointed. I know it's supposed to be a good thing to sometimes stray from what you've originally done, but this IMO, was their worst album. It didn't give me the emotional high the others do. If that makes any sense. If you're looking to check out some good DM go to their old classic albums. This is totally not what defines their sound.

irony: when the intended meaning is not the actual meaning. this album is soooo boring and it's titled exciter. this is dm at their worst, save for dream on and dead of night which were both amazing live. the rest is so bad i didn't even pay attention to playing the angel until i heard 'precious' by accident. wow this album is awful, and gets worse with time. get the 2 afforementioned and maybe 'i feel loved' and discard the rest. it IS dm after all, and there had to be some redeeming quality but you really have to dig for it on the incredibly boring 'exciter'

Great and brilliant album from Depeche Mode it takes a while to catch the sensation of it like it did for me for example"Goodnight Lovers" what a great song the tour backing the album was outstanding.

I admit when I first bought this album (not the remastered, the original, many, many years ago) I did not think this was their best work. However it has really grown on me. There are a few songs that I fast forward but then there are several that I love. Sure in the scheme of things it's no Music for the Masses, or Violator, or Playing the Angel but if you like DEPECHE get it. Also if they're coming to a venue near you on their Sounds of the Universe Tour, GO. Very good show.
